Dining in the Upper Library - Image provided by The Signet Library

The Signet Library, in the centre of Edinburgh's old town, is synonymous with prestige and georgain elegance.

The Signet Library is the home of The Society of Writers to Her Majesty’s Signet (also known as The WS Society) – an association of Scottish lawyers and one of the oldest professional bodies in the world. The Society’s origins lie in the 15th century as the “writers” of documents sealed with “the Signet”, the private seal of the Scottish Kings – hence “Writers to the Signet” or “WS”.

Steeped in history, the building, with its Lower and Upper Libraries, was completed in 1822 in time for the celebrated visit to Edinburgh of King George IV who described the upper library as “the finest drawing room in Europe”.

The Upper Library is a magnificent setting for any event from gala dinners, product launches and drinks receptions to film locations and wedding celebrations. The architecture and decor of the room provide a beautiful setting for every style of occasion.

The Lower Library, with its columns, cornices, galleries and balustrades, is ideal for a drinks reception before an event in the Upper Library, or for aperitifs before a dinner in the Commissioners’ Room.

The Commissioners’ Room is the ideal setting for intimate corporate client dinners and family occasions, from wedding anniversary celebrations to christening lunches.

The Seminar and Arbitration Rooms are contemporary rooms with seating for 4-40 persons in a variety of layouts – ideal for business meetings or team training sessions.
