21st birthday venue edinburgh

Curiouser and curiouser

A dream of a 21st birthday party took place recently at Mansfield Traquair, Edinburgh. Our birthday girl chose a theme originally inspired by film director Tim Burton which emerged as Alice in Wonderland meets Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Working closely with industry partners Kyles on Scotland, we adore this kind of challenge and so it was that Mansfield Traquair became a surreal yet inviting space, lit to stunning effect, complete with giant toadstools, spherical potted ‘trees’ drawing the eye along each long table and the Cheshire cat projected onto every wall.

As guests entered the party venue they were handed a potion bottle containing a bright blue non-alcoholic cocktail with a ‘Drink Me’ label, setting the scene for a truly original celebration.

Our chefs were delighted that the guest of honour was herself a bit of a foodie, and following a course at the Edinburgh School of Food and Wine was keen for her friends to taste something rather special. The menu included seared hand dived scallops, broad bean and chorizo puree with pea veloute and smoked paprika cream, followed by tournedos of wild boar (we love this girl’s menu verve!), little roots tossed in herb butter, glazed shallots and a charred red pepper garnish.

We went to town on pudding – how could one not with that choc factory theme, with individual kilner jars of candied rhubarb with ginger and honeycomb and vanilla custard served with rose flavoured marshmallows, chocolate pencil and pistachio ice cream bombe.

We like to think that Roald Dahl and Lewis Carroll would have thoroughly approved. Luckily the party-goers were suitably entranced and we have another quirky show-stopper to add to our image portfolio.
